About South African Express Airways (XZ)

South African Express Airways (XZ) — also known as SA Express — is a state-owned South African carrier based out of O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), the primary transportation hub for the Johannesburg metropolitan area. It offers primarily domestic and regional flights to 11 destinations in 4 countries in Southern Africa. Although an independent airline, SA Express is part of the South African Airways (SA) alliance. Its fleet consists of Bombardier aircraft seating between 50 and 74 passengers.

  Popular Destinations

As one of the main value-based regional airlines in South Africa, SA Express’ most popular destinations are domestic, with cheap daily flights to and from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Richards Bay, and Port Elizabeth. The airline operates scheduled flights to less traveled airports in Bloemfontein, Hoedspruit, and Kimberley as well. For regional travel, Gaborone in Botswana, Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Walvis Bay in Namibia are among the airline’s most popular destinations. As SA Express continues to expand, service to other African countries may be expected.

  Choosing your car

One great way to save money is to link your SA Express to a car hire from Avis, Hertz, Europcar, National, Sixt, or Thrifty, and we’re here to help you do that. Now, it’s a matter of choosing the type of vehicle that’s right for you. Fleets include economy 2-door and compact 4-door sedans, standard and fullsize sedans, estate wagons, premium and luxury vehicles such as convertibles, SUVs, and 7-12 seater minivans.

Tips for South African Express Airways Passengers Renting Cars

1

The minimum age for renting a car from major brands in South Africa is 23 years old, and you must have held the license for a minimum of 3 years.

2

Get familiar with your credit card’s travel insurance policy — it might save you a lot of money at the car hire counter. All South Africa Express car rentals come with a Collision Damage Waiver (Loss Damage Waiver) as well as Theft Protection. Major claims may involve an excess amount, which can be covered by the add-on Collision Excess Waiver. Most credit card travel insurance plans cover the excess amount.

3

The majority of car rentals come with a GPS built-in to the vehicle. Often times, your provider will be running a special deal on free online GPS — but you can’t count on that. Thus, you may be tempted to save on navigation costs by using a mobile device instead. Be sure to check with your cell carrier to make sure you won’t be hit with costly roaming charges.

4

Due to South African insurance regulations, travel across international boundaries is restricted. Meanwhile, third-party travel insurance plans may or may not be recognized, depending on location.

5

The fee to use your own child restraint/booster seat is often equal to or greater than renting one from your airline car rental provider.

6

Unlike  it’s allied partner South African Airways, the SA Express website doesn’t currently offer a direct link between flights and car hires — which is how we can help. Check out our services to match your flight and car with a better deal and far less hassle.
