About South African Airways (SA)

South African Airways (SA) is the national airline of South Africa, headquartered at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Kempton Park, Gauteng. From its primary hub in Johannesburg, South African Airways flies to 56 domestic, regional, and international destinations. The airline also operates subsidiary carriers SA Express, SA Airlink, and budget carrier, Mango.

  Popular Destinations

South African Airways most popular destinations are generally cities within South Africa. However, through partnerships and codeshare agreements, the airline offers service to 38 destinations in 26 countries throughout Africa, Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania — with Perth being its primary Australian destination. Generally speaking, the airline’s presence is most strongly felt in the region of Southern Africa. However, the airline operates regular flights to exotic locations such as Dubai and Paris.

  Choosing your car

Our services are designed to save you money on airline car rentals, and one way we do that is by teaming your South African Airways flight with a car hire from the most trusted names in the business — Alamo, Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt, Thrifty, and others. Whatever type of car you need, rest assured you’ll get the best possible deal. Choose from minicars, compact and economy 4-door sedans, intermediate and fullsize sedans, luxury and premium vehicles, all-wheel drive SUVs, and of course, 7-12 seater minivans.

Tips for South African Airways Passengers Renting Cars

GPS is a prerequisite in most airline car rentals, but it isn’t always included in the rental price. Thus, there’s a big difference between online and offline satellite navigation. Before you decide to use a mobile device for navigation, check with your cell provider about roaming charges. It might be cheaper to simply take the GPS option when you rent a car.

The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection are included with your rental. However, be advised that a Collision Excess Waiver offered by the provider is just another additional cost. In fact, your credit card’s travel insurance may cover any excess amount, so check with your issuer before signing up for any additional coverage.

You must be at least 23 years or older to rent a car in South Africa, and you must held that license for 3 years.

To get a really cheap rate on a rental, book as far in advance as possible.

Generally speaking, car hire companies want to see that your credit card is valid for 6 months from the date of your rental, and has enough available credit to satisfy the deposit or “hold” on the card. Be forewarned that the deposit amounts vary wildly from country to country.

Quick tips: Unlike many destinations, it’s not common for South African car rentals to include unlimited mileage. Meanwhile, optional extras like child booster seats are available at a nominal rate — often times cheaper than the fee to use your own child restraint seat. And on top of that, you’ll encounter restrictions for driving across international borders — which generally isn’t allowed in South Africa.
