About Kosovo (KO)

The independent Republic of Kosovo (KO) is a disputed territory in the central Balkans, carved out of the southwest corner of Serbia and bordered by North Macedonia to the south, and Montenegro and Albania to the west. Despite furious opposition from the Serbian government, the Republic of Kosovo is recognized by the majority of United Nations member countries. However, it’s not a participant in a wide range of international organizations. Needless to say, Kosovo is a highly controversial place. Few Western visitors find it necessary or beneficial to travel in Kosovo for any extended period of time. As time goes on, this is undoubtedly due to change, and hopefully, travelers will return to this historically important and fairly diverse, mountainous region.

  Getting around

Tourists visiting Kosovo can be comfortable in that it is now a very safe destination, with the exception of petty crime such as theft and very specific areas that can be referenced to localized issues.  Sentiments from locals may well therefore be exaggerated statements based on personal experience from the distant past, but nevertheless, in the absence of adequate public transportation, visitors will be compelled to rent a car in Kosovo. In reality, Kosovo’s roads are in fair shape and provide reasonable access to all major destinations. The government is actively improving all aspects of the country’s infrastructure, which sometimes leads to delays on the highway. Overall, driving in Kosovo is pretty easy. However, be advised that a number of contingencies will apply to drivers from European Union countries, starting with the fact that your insurance “green card” is not recognized in Kosovo. Meanwhile, traveling to Montenegro and Albania is generally problem-free, but you probably won’t be allowed to drive your Kosovo car rental into Serbia. Do check with the rental car supplier booking conditions shown here, because these types of situations are generally fluid and you should get the latest update prior to your arrival in Kosovo.

  Choosing your car

Cheap car rentals in Kosovo with discounts are available from Avis, Hertz, Budget, Enterprise, Sixt, Europcar, and National. Choose from minicars, compact sedans, economy hatchbacks, standard and fullsize 4-door sedans, SUVs, 7-12 seater minivans, estate wagons, and specialty vehicles.

Tips and advice for renting a car in Kosovo

1

There are no toll roads in Kosovo. Again, this could change as Kosovo continues to expand its network of expressways.

2

As mentioned earlier, you’ll most likely need to purchase car insurance from your Kosovo car hire vendor. Many major credit card travel insurances may not cover car rentals in Kosovo. Save money and aggravation by doing a little homework before renting. Collision damage excess waiver insurance may well be available depending on your residency, here on our site to save you money.

3

Expect long lines at border crossings, particularly in summer.

4

Animal hazards are a persistent issue on roads in Kosovo. Meanwhile, rural routes are poorly illuminated and not always clearly marked.

5

Many roads in Kosovo are roughly half the width of most European roads, which are already considered “too narrow” by North American and Oceanic standards.

6

If possible, have two satellite navigation systems in your vehicle — a GPS unit and Google Maps on a mobile device — and do frequent crosschecks to make sure you’re headed in the right direction.
