About Maroochydore Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY)
Address: Terminal Building Maroochydore Airport, Maroochydore, 4558, Qld, Qld
Formerly known as Maroochydore Airport, Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) is situated 90 km (56 mi) north of Brisbane at the northern edge of the Sunshine Coast in South East Queensland. Located in Marcoola, 10 km (6 mi) north of its namesake Maroochydore, (MCY) is the primary stepping stone to a plethora of holiday destinations such as Australia Zoo (44 km / 26 mi), Frasier Island (260 km / 161 mi), Great Sandy National Park (68 km / 42 mi), and the sundrenched beach resorts around Noosa (30 km / 18 mi) and Caloundra (28 km /17 mi).
Getting around the vast Sunshine Coast is highly improbable without a car. Although the region offers an array of scenic attractions and sunny recreational activities, it remains relatively “undiscovered” by hordes of tourists, so you won’t be dealing with traffic jams or complicated parking regulations and procedures. The Sunshine Coast is the kind of place where you hop in the car hire and head off in just about any direction — you’re bound to take in some spectacular views.
Tourist Drive 24 aka Steve Irwin Way is a popular 30-km (18 mi) scenic drive through Glass House Mountains. From Caloundra, the gauntlet of Sunshine Coastal beaches stretch for another 55 km (33 mi) north to Sunshine Beach.
Your primary road worries will be centered around distances, fuel, animal road hazards, and driving at night. Otherwise, navigating this gorgeous area is about as straightforward as things get. Program your destination into the GPS, and away you go!
Choosing your car
(MCY) airport car rental options leave nothing to be desired. Rent a car from Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, Budget, or Europcar, all of which are found in the arrivals area of the airport terminal. Mitsubishi minicars are great for couples and solo travelers, while the same make SUV is ideal for surfers and beach bums. Kia economy and 4-door standard cars are perfect for families, while Hyundai compact and intermediate sedans get you from place to place with no fuss or muss. Larger groups with watersports gear will need a 7-9 seater Toyota minivan.
Tips and advice for renting a car at Maroochydore Airport
Road services — fuel, food, rest, assistance — are scarce in remote inland areas, generally referred to as The Outback.
Technically, The Outback refers to any inland area that receives less than 300 mm (11”) of rainfall per year. Most of Queensland’s outback is found in the north and northwest, for example, the tiny town of Boulia at the junction of State Route 62 and National Route 83, some 1,712 km (1,063 mi) northwest of Brisbane.
Trucks hauling two or more freight trailers or semi-trailers are called road trains, and reach lengths of 50 m or more. The roads of Queensland have a fair share of road trucks. The general idea is to get around the big rigs as quickly but safely as possible.
Fuel or petrol stations are colloquially “servos”. Depending upon the make and model of your car hire, you’ll be using unleaded (ULP) or diesel.
Animals on the road — especially at night — pose a significant hazard on remote highways. Driving between dusk and sunrise is discouraged.
For optimal fuel efficiency, keep your windows rolled up when traveling over 70 km/h on the highways. Your car hire must — no questions — be equipped with air conditioning. Don’t leave the airport parking lot without testing the system to make sure it’s pumping out cool air.
