About Air Canada (AC)

Air Canada (AC) is Canada’s largest airline by passenger traffic and fleet size, with its main hub located at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The flag carrier is a founding member of the Star Alliance, operating service to 64 domestic destinations and 158 international destinations throughout Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. In tandem with its regional subsidiary, Air Canada Express, the airline flies to over 220 destinations in 47 countries, on all six inhabited continents.

  Popular Destinations

Among more than 1,600 daily flights, Air Canada’s most popular destinations are the domestic hubs of Calgary, Montreal, and Vancouver, plus the focus cities of Halifax and Ottawa. The Air Canada Vacations subsidiary offers vacation packages to more than 90 destinations worldwide, including Bangkok, Acapulco, Miami, and Honolulu. The airline’s operations include a number of passenger routes between two non-Canadian airports, such as Honolulu-Sydney, Paris-Munich, Zürich-Delhi, and London Heathrow-Mumbai-Singapore.

Tips for Air Canada Passengers Renting Cars

1

Air Canada car rentals generally include the base rate, taxes and surcharges, and 600 km of mileage. Otherwise, everything from GPS to Collision/Loss Damage Waivers (CDW/LDW) are subject to daily fees — including child safety seats, which are typically subject to a one-time flat rate.

2

All those extras add up fast, but you can still get a cheap car rental by following a couple of savvy tips. First of all, check with your credit card about travel insurance coverage — it may cover the CDW/LDW, as well as the Personal Accident and Effects (PAE) policy that you’ll be offered as yet another add on.

3

Many major wireless data carriers offer unlimited or substantial roaming allowances, which would negate the need to rent a car with GPS. After all, your mobile device uses the exact same technology for navigation. Just remember to follow location specific rules about hands-free mobile usage.

4

Minimum age requirements are also location specific, but the general rule of thumb is drivers 25 years and older will not be hit with an underage surcharge, and will have access to all vehicle types. Typically, the worldwide absolute minimum age for renting a car is 21.

5

Debit cards are not accepted for booking and securing the car hire, but paying the final bill with a debit card is allowed.

6

Accepting the CDW/LDW limits your liability to a location specific deductible, meaning you’re only responsible for damage/loss under a set amount — which is generally between $100-$500 U.S. dollars. For example, if you have a minor fender-bender requiring $250 in repairs, you’re liable for that amount. If the car gets totaled, you’re only responsible for the deductible ($500 max). Meanwhile, Partial Damage/Loss Waivers (PDW/LDW) only cover your liability up to a certain amount — it’s $1,000 CAD in Canada — meaning you’re on the hook for anything above that amount. Excess Damage Waivers (also known as Excess Reduction (ER)) cover the full market value of the vehicle, no matter what happens.
